As usual, I read the latest Jack Reacher novel in less than two days, but unusually, I was quite disappointed with it.

The context for the storyline was just a bit too contrived for me, and the villain of the piece was by far the worst that Lee has come up with so far.

Reacher was his usual self, Lee seems so comfortable with this character that writing about him, and his ways, must come as second nature now. However, the rest of the characters development left a lot to be desired.

The set pieces seemed contrived just to get Reacher into a fight, which is not the normal MO of Child.

The ultimate premise of the story is a good one, but I don't think that the author made the most of it this time.

Anyway, sorry my first post on here had to be quite negative, and i hope I haven't spoiled it for anyone.

I fully agree. This was my second least favourite Reacher book after Die Trying. Felt it was too much like Killing Floor, and there was just not enough twists to keep me guessing.

I have not been able to put previous books down, but this one took me 5 or 6 days to read as I did not feel compelled to keep reading until I could read no more.

I didn't like the fact that Reacher slept with Vaughan as I felt it was unfair on her husband. Given that he was a soldier, I thought Reacher may have felt too bad to take it further with her. It was the first time I did not want him to sleep with a woman.

I hope his next book is a blockbuster.

I really couldn't have cared less if he slept with Vaughan or not - I didn't really feel any chemistry there at all ..... and a slight confession ... which I feel very guilty about ... I thought when he went to the vets hospital and Vaughan left him alone I was heading down the route of assisted suicide. In retrospect I realise that would have been so un-Reacher.

Maybe I am a bad person ... maybe I was trying to spice things up a bit.

I can never put a Jack Reacher novel down until I've read it - so, mostly in one go!! I have loved all of them But "Nothing to Lose" left me cold. I thought it was pretty boring and definitely not up to Lee Child's normal excellence. I'm so relieved that this wasn't his first novel as I probably would never have bothered with any others! So, Mr Childs, let's hope your next book gets you back on track ...

welcome Anerobi, I think it is fair to say that it is not his best work to date. I think Lee is setting the scene for the next one here. Reacher aint getting any younger and we have seen a lot happen since his first novel, the Killing Floor, 9/11 for example.

all of a sudden events like that change the dynamic of a nation and their army, I think that is what is happening with Lee, steering reacher down a different road.

In the grand scheme of things it is still a great book if you judge it against other writers. Judge it against other reacher books and it is below par. Embarassed

LMAO Laughing Laughing .. Oh Mac, You are a hoot!!!

You said NTL was great and now that the public speak you are changing your mind Twisted Evil
I don't believe there is a grand plan, Lee just missed the bull’s-eye, I am sure given his track record he will be back on form next time around. I just don't see the point in over analysing to justify a below expectations offering. I applaud your loyalty tho! Very Happy

Okay, okay, so can a guy not change his mind or is that solely for the fairer sex. Embarassed

My first stance on this book was merely not to prejudice the reading for others. I stand by my convictions that it is a great book but not one of his best. Shocked

I know Lee is not overly concerned and that he appreciates greatly the shed load of money that he has made thus far. Furthermore he is happy as a pig in muck about how well the book has done in the charts. Rolling Eyes

So yes, your right okay, are you happy now, now go away and pick on someone else pretty please. Crying or Very sad

Janey Mac Shocked !!! I am sorry did you just say You're Right Shocked

Well that'll do for me Mr. Green

However (last word), not wanting to prejudice other readers ... hmmm Confused ... I think that's a bit weak Rolling Eyes

Reacher and Vaughan...absolutely he should have slept with her. She needed it, deserved it and her poor dear husband would have wanted her to. Unfair on him? In what way? He is never going to recover. He is never going to be a husband to her again. He is never going to know or have feelings about it...ever.

She is alive and functioning and vital and entitled to a sex life. Her duty to him is one of care. Her duty to herself is to not die inside.

(I wondered about the assisted suicide thing too but I couldn't work out how Jack would have justified it.)

As for the book...a little low impact for me. Reacher by numbers. It started out ok...kept me reading 'cos I was happy to be back in Reacherland. But as the story began to unfold...the picture it revealed just wasn't very interesting. There was never a moment when I was scared or on the edge of my seat...I kept waiting, hoping...thinking it was going to happen soon...but it didn't.

So its not one I feel compelled to read again...happily there are many others that I most definitely will...heading off to find my copy of Tripwire...

Hi all.
Just read this one this week and I enjoyed it.
I must admit that I am getting a little tired of the "padding"
That is to say that I am finding a lot of "descriptive" text in this one.
I know some people will be reading this book as a stand alone, first read, but I am reading them in sequence, one a week.

Also, I wanted Jack to sleep with the "young wife" of the missing big guy that Reacher sees in the alley, not the cop.

But I think its because I am getting old and letcherous. lol.
